My 100 hp merc has a enrichiner on the carb, to shoot a jet of gas in the carb to make it start. I think it is bad ,because when I put the wires directly on the battery it does not move, it should move outward, right? Trouble is I bought a new one and it does not move either, when I attach it to hot wires, and I put it on the motor, and it will not start. Motor starts with a shot of starting fluid though. I am at a loss on what to do. Thanks

Re: Enrichiner problems

I don't know about the enrichener, but I wouldn't be spraying starting fluid in the motor. It will wash all the oil of the cyl walls and cause imediate friction. Might not cause damage the first time but , give it time.........Jerry

Are you pushing the key in to activate the enrichener? You might want to measure the voltage on those wires with the key pushed in (RUN) position. If The enrichener is not seeing 12V it won't activate. Does the enrichener click when the key is pushed?

Re: Enrichiner problems

These are my thoughts:

Disconnect the hose going from the enrichner to the carb (disconnect at the carb end). Place carb end of hose in a container. Push in the ignition key (choke) to activate enrichner. If fuel comes out of the hose, then conclude that the enrichner is working OK and your problem is elsewhere. If no fuel comes out, push on the manual button at top of enrichner to see if fuel comes out then. If fuel still does not come out, then the problem is likely in the fuel line upstream of the enrichner. If fuel does come out, confirm that you are getting 12v at the enrichner during key press. If no 12v during key press, troubleshoot the wiring.

Also, if you are tracing wiring, especially if you are reading color codes in the wiring diagram pay particular attention to the use of YEL-BLK and BLK-YEL terminology. One is a yellow wire with a black stripe, the other a black wire with a yellow stripe.

One operates your fuel enrichment, the other is your ignition kill wire for when you want to turn the engine off. You do not want to get them reversed.....one works with 12V the other ground.

Re: Enrichiner problems

Forgot something. Deep Creep is Sea Foam in a can and made for 2 cycle marine engines (and almost everything else). It contains the oil that 2 cycles need to lubricate their innerds when used. Starting fluid is not for this job even though they may say it contains a lubricant.

Re: Enrichiner problems

Thanks for the good information everyone. I should have mentioned that the motor is in a 1995 sportjet. It is a outboard, attached to a jet unit, and could pass as a inboard, because everything is enclosed. A bad design that these setups have is that there is no way to attach a hose and run them out of the water.
