What is the most common resin used in boat building?

I have a repair to do to my boat, but I'm not sure whether the boat was built with Polyester resin, or epoxy.

What are the implecations of using the wrong resin?

Thanks
Steve

Re: Epoxy or Polyester

Poly is pretty much the standard outside of those rotomolded rigs and the woodies. You can use epoxy and achieve superior repair results, but you will not be able to gelcoat over the repair, as the gelcoat will not adhere to the epoxy. Poly can also be used, and if done properly, will be all you actually need. Epoxy is for when you really want the peace of mind. Either way, the repair must be properly prepped or neither one will work well.

General rule of thumb: Epoxy can be used on poly, but poly cannot be used on epoxy, the poly will not bond properly. Hope this helps....
