Epoxy vs. Poly - how do know?

I'm planning to replace the floor in a 1976 Proline. It's a liner style boat. I plan to use epoxy based poducts for the rebuild but have read that epoxy won't stick to polyester or vice-versa. But how do you determine what type of product was used by the factory when the boat was originally built?

Epoxy will stick to the break of day. Sand the surface you're going to apply it to first.

c/6

Hooty

there's a 99.9 % chance your boat is poly.. an probably since your boat is a 1976 it's a 100 % chance it's poly... epoxy's good stuff..

It is my understanding that:

Epoxy bonds better to old polyester than polyester.

Epoxy bonds to epoxy and is waterproof and polyester will soak up water( the reason for gelcoat?).

Epoxy is too expensive for consideration in most boat production, and most all boats are polyester and some few of vinyl ester.

I've read this and found epoxy to be reliable for repairs to polyester though I have not attempted to make repairs with polyester.

Epoxy will stick to most anything, except certain plastics. They even manufacture epoxies formulated for sticking to concrete and metal. I have used it on my entire re-build and it sticks fine to other epoxy and poly.

I have even managed to stick both my butt and my head to the hull (don't ask it's a long story).

Cheers.

emp.

Crab Bait,

Short story is I didn't realize I had spilled some on the deck from a previous batch, and was rolling a new pour on the underside of a compartment while laying on the deck, well the rest is history.

Just got some hair and a pair of shorts! Good thing I was wearing *********!

Cheers.

emp.

Thanks everyone, for the comments and suggestions. Looks like it will be epoxy, if I can ever find the time and a place to tear into the boat.

ddo1968, if you don't have a good local source for epoxy check out these 2 links. I have used over 20 gallons of both there epoxies with great results. Price raanges from 25 to 35 $ a gallon for 6 gallon sets. I have also used about 12 gallons of west systems at twice the cost and see no difference in any of them. Good luck with your project.

http://www.raka.com

http://www.uscomposites.com
