I have an 89 bayliner with a 5.8 Omc and an SEI outdrive conversion on the back. I bought it right after the conversion was done. I have no problem with the outdrive, the shifting is another matter, however I dont think it's nessesarly because of the outdrive, but I'm not sure. It seems, depending on the degree of outdrive trim, when I go from forward to neutral it will kill the engine. the unit needs to be almost all the way down for this to not happen, it only has to be trimmed back just a hair too far to make this occur. On the other hand if it is trimmed back Too far it will just simply not go into neutral, or it will go in neutral but the prop will keep turning.
I have witnessed on the linkage on top of the engine, the point at which it kills the engine, and you only have to touch the trim buttom slightly to put it in the position where it's ok. I don't have a trim guage so basically I have to count up about 1 second and a half from full down to put it in the position it needs to be in to work just right.
Unfortenetly I have about taken out my dock box twice this summer because the engine died as I was pulling into the slip, so I had no brakes !
I'm taking the boat in this weekend to get winterized, I would like to have my dealer try and figure out why this is happening, he is a mercruiser dealer and has a tech who knows Omc as well. anything I can tell them to look for ?
