I have a 1988 Evinrude, VRO V4, 110 HP, 2 stroke. Yesterday while cruising along I observed my ammeter fluctuating quite a bit. Went to almost 15 volts, dropped to 13.5 then down to about 12.5. Did this several times and each movement was abrupt. Now it will not read any higher than 12 volts. I checked output everywhere with a mult meter but still get only 12 volts. I am wondering if this might be a bad voltage regulator. I can't find the voltage regulator on my engine and I am wondering where that is located.

Thanks Jim, I'll look for the volt reg or rectifier. Now that you mention it I think I saw something just to the side of the power pack.

Steve

Thanks, Steve

Re: Erratic ammeter readings

Sounds like the regulator/rectifier, buyt check the wiring out first.
Most OMC V4 regulator/rectifiers are water cooled and are on the top aft part of the block. You may have to remove some other stuff like the powerpack to get at it
