Having trouble with my tachometer. When ignition key is turned on the tach jumps up and does not zero out. When engine is started the tach jumps erratically at idle but engine runs smooth. When throttle is applied tach operates accordingly. I`ve changed my ignition module and coil but still the same problem my tach ties into the coil which in turn ties to the alternator. I`m leaning towards my alternator being damaged. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Re: Erratic

Check your wires first.

Look for loose or corroded connections

Start looking at the easy things first

I had the same issue. To resolve it, I tightened every connection on the back of every gauge, and it corrected itself. Do you have a problem with any other gauges not working?

Re: Erratic

I would check the connections first, especially if it's a salt water boat. If that does'nt do it, hook up an auxillary tach and see what that does.
