ES Wiring Confusion

I have a 1979 7.5HP Electric Start motor with an odd wiring connection. I have the Clymer manual for the engine, and it shows the lead between the starter switch and the rectifier block connected to the (+) battery side of the switch. On my motor, that lead is connected to the starter side of the starter switch. The starter and switch work fine, but I don't understand why this would be done. Also, isn't that lead there to re-charge the battery? That would not work with this setup, would it?<br />Thanks.

Re: ES Wiring Confusion

You are correct. The plus side of the rectifier has to go to the battery side of the starter switch in order to charge the battery.

Re: ES Wiring Confusion

While de-carbing my engine, I looked at the starter motor to make sure it was not running while the engine was going with this strange connection. I wanted to make sure the charge current coming from the rectifier wasn't turning over the starter. Does this mean the stator is not working? I did a diode check on all the proper rectifier posts and the rectifier is okay. I know I should have checked for around 12v at the terminal while the engine was running.
