I think I might throw in the towel on this motor, the little plastic cup under the flywheel blew apart. Pretty much at WOT there was a nice crunch, I though it was the engine blowing up.
So I think a johhyrude is lookin pretty good right now.

What a drag, T-Ty. I gotta admit, that in looking at the three motors, I have, 7.5hp points motor, 2004 Johnson 4 stroke, and the Gamefisher 9.9, I'd like to use the 9.9 'cause it's the most power with reasonable weight. I look at that motor with it's plastic starter, and plastic flywheel hub, and I know it's a grenade motor. I'm just not going to bet on it. That Johnson is brutally heavy for a geriatric stick boy loading it in the boat in a truck, but it lights and runs every time with one yank. You definitely got a high vacuum situation here. (It sucks). Even if you got another plastic flywheel hub, you know that starter is just waiting for you to get way downstream of the ramp to blow up on ya. I think your moving in the right direction thinkin' JonnyRude. You still have legendary man points for that CDI ignition, though.

Re: Eska 15hp died today

I have a lead on a 9.9 and two 7.5's for 250 as a package.I think that's just gonna add to my headache though, maybe I'll just see if I can get a plastic hub or I'll just build a points and condenser setup over the winter lol
That 15 really moved like a bat outta he'll 14' 3 guys and gear and we were movin good.

It would be funnier if I wasn't livin' it, Mr. C. T-Ty, I think your probably right about heading to PITA town for $250 - If you commit to the 9.9, you have to keep parts, so you need a parts motor or two, and you've still got reliability problems. If you could make a flywheel hub out of delrin or phenolic, you'd still have the issue of the starter. I thought they used plastic because the teeth on the flywheel are aluminum. I have a Scott self propelled 6.5 hp walk behind mower with an electric starter, and I though about adapting the ring gear and starter to the 9.9, but the bracketry seems too complicated. Maybe the bracketry for a standard pull starter with a topside flywheel cup would be more do-able, but still a challenge. It probably wouldn't go under the cowl anymore either. To permanently solve these problems, ya gotta re-design, and fabricate a lot of stuff, or keep scarfing up spare parts. The truth is, that I haven't completely given up on the idea of the 9.9, because I think it would make my boat flat scat. I'll be interested to see what you decide to do.

Parts motors pop up constantly on ebay in the winter months some times with in driving range of ones home, and some will even ship to Canada!!, I got a ebay deal on a whole engine for $20 last winter...I had to drive 2 hrs round trip but it had everything I needed,

It would be funnier if I wasn't livin' it, Mr. C.

I wasn't making fun of you mahty, I just had you pictured as young fat fellow  I'm feeling kind of geriatric myself these days

The starter gear, I was thinking of reenforcing it with a metal ring/plate and jbweld. There is also a old Briggs pull start that has a similar tooth pattern and setup I might try to setup.
This thing Is like a damn unicorn lol
I had less trouble with my 90 hp force and those are supposed to be crap.

Re: Eska 15hp died today

autopsy is complete, finally got that stubborn flywheel off, the puller pulled a m11x1.75 right threw the flywheel after being left over night. So anger stepped in and a 5 pound sledge took that flywheel off. luckly noting else was damaged ( i do not advise doing this).
What it looks like is the little plastic hub's magnet can catch on the trigger coils because they protrude from the module about 1mm.The magnet in the hub caught the module and broke the ends off the weights , everything else that could break did, i was at WOT which wasnt too smart on a 36 year old engine that hasn't ran much. Unless the plastic hub's magnet dislodged itself, cause it does have a pretty tight fit around the crankshaft.

i'll make a video and let you see the flywheel it might be re-useable and you can now see how i rigged up me module's traces/wiring.
by the way i'm looking for a flywheel. lol

Oh, Lord, Mr. C, no offense taken. If I sound young, it's because I'm a late bloomer - probably a mental age of 20, LOL. T-Ty, that's really good information to have, about the hub magnet hangin' on the triggers. I have read about those hubs crashing before, and wondered what the failure pattern might be. I wonder if a little light grinding on the magnet would prevent the crash. I'm also surprised to hear of a Briggs starter that looks anything like this Rube Goldburgh lash up we got. Where might a guy see a picture of it? What kind of power equipment was it found on?

Re: Eska 15hp died today

just chargin my batter on my camera then i'll get some pic's up.
the pull start came to me on an old lawnmower i fixed for a friend maybe 70's?, i swapped engines with him cause when i saw the starter cause i had a lightbulb over my head lol.

as for that hub i think i am going to grind the modules smooth get a new magnet and jb weld or epoxy it into whats left of the hub. also those little weights are made of aluminum no wonder they broke so i might make new ones out of steel.

I wonder if the weights will be too heavy for the springs if they are steel. Do they just sling out to full advance at idle, (above pull start RPM), or do they vary the timing all the way thru the RPM range? I bet they just sling out when it starts. I'll keep an eye peeled for the pics.
