My newly acquired outboard is almost impossible to start. When I get lucky and it fires up, when I try to open the choke, it dies and once again is very difficult to refire. I removed and cleaned the carb, adjusted the float, new spark plug, lightly sanded the points, fresh 50:1 fuel. It needs an impeller, and if I need any other parts, I would rather order 'em all at once. Thanks to anyone with helpful advice!

Hi, Jeff.

Welcome to iboats.

Go back to the carb. Clear the small orifice(s) in the carb throat. Sometimes it takes a fine wire, sometimes just air pressure. You might have to remove a plug in the top of the throat to get at them. There is a replacement plug in the overhaul kit.

I agree with JB - a carb overhaul kit is in order. Might also be an air leak in the carb somewhere (o-rings or gaskets). I'd take a look at the fuel pump diaphragm and gas lines too.

Thanks for the warm welcome to iboats and for the guidance towards a solution to my frustrating issue with this motor. After a carb rebuild, I'll let you guys know my results! It's for a 14ft aluminum v-hull and my Merc 2.2 runs great, but just a little too slow! Thanks again!

I agree, spend the 30$ and do the carb right and do it by the Tecumseh engine manual exactly....also set the sync carb to ignition cam by the book), or check the orange pump element for a split and proper orentation of the flapper valve, and just for info the plugs gap at .35 and points .19-.20 and you need to polish them with some brown bag paper, sanding them only will shorten there operational life.
