I have 2 of th these motors I picked up for around $150 total to get them running. Figured I could get one pretty easy out of the two.
One is a 1971 and one is a 1975. Both are almost identical with one having twist throttle.
I'm getting enough spark to jolt myself but not enough to throw an ark. I've sanded the points(haven't checked the gap yet/one set of points were clean other was filthy).
I was kind of hoping these had Solid State ignition because I wanted to modify them with stronger capacitors but no such luck(or bad luck depending on how you look at it) certainly not adding that though.
Flywheel mags are clean and everything looks good so it's very strange that both would have the same issues(bought from different people).
I didn't have a spark tester but will have one today but visibly there's nothing(didn't turn the lights off in the garage).
I'm willing to bet they both have the same issue. I've read here where you can convert them to a more reliable johnson system and at least know I can do that on one engine that has enough to jolt me(trigger must work at least).
Before I sort of give up on what's on it are there any other ideas? I would check the points gap(Lost my feeler gauges.. I know I know) but what are the odds that both would be out of spec?
They seem like cool little simple engines to mess with and just wanted one to put on a 9.4 water tender I have but i'm sort of doing it as a hobby so don't mind spending some money on the motors plus I like keeping old stuff going.
I'll admit that while i'm decently mechanical ignition systems aren't my thing so maybe this is good that I learn. Any advice?
