US Marines found cyanide and mustard agents in high
concentrations in the Euphrates River near Nassiriya in Iraq, television network MSNBC has reported.

The network said a briefing from Marine officials was its source for the information.

The agents were found during routine tests conducted to ensure the water being used is safe, MSNBC said.

Neither Centcom officials in Qatar nor US military officials in Iraq have confirmed the MSNBC report.

Mustard gas produces painful, long-lasting blisters and often leads to blindness, while cyanide kills by preventing blood from transporting oxygen.

This is truly sick. I hope the regime wasn't dumping to get rid of the evidence.

Follow-up reports said that the initial tests were NOT correct, and that there is now NO evidence that the river has been contaminated. That's good! BV

Thanks for the update.

I guess you can just add this to this list of overjealous reporters?

I am thankful that our troops are checking the water though.

It's interesting to note that the Garden of Eden was suposed to have been near the junction of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Things sure changed over there, didn't they?

Delibertly poisoned or not, it doubtful that these river would otherwise be pristine, anyway.

These type of chemicals may have been present there in trace amounts (or more), for many years. There was problably mimimal, if any, environmental controls in place, in pre-war Iraq.

It may be that only now, it has become a news-worthy bite.

Marty
