Cool pics. Where were they taken? I saw an albino deer once. Was the weirdest looking thing, and at first I didn't realize what it was.

This deer exhibits what is referred to as Melanism. It occurs from an excess of Melanin in the body. It has been seen as a phase in some animals during maturation, but is rare in most animals, including White Tail Deer. It is also more rare than Albinism, which results from a lack of Melanin.

Dolluper, thanks for correcting. I'm sure your cousin is going to hear it from you!

The photos were taken by a well known nature photographer by the name of Richard M. Buquoi. As some of you know, I am a photographer also. What you may not know, is that I shoot mostly scenic and wildlife, which is one of the reasons why I recognised the photos quickly.

Richard is an exceptional nature photographer and I want to make sure he is credited, because as one who has first hand experience in what it takes to get such shots, I appreciate the work, the skill and the patience involved.

You can see more of Richard's stunning work here ....

"phase in some animals during maturation"

You know, you just glance at a post and it can get you all panicked sometimes.

I thought for sure I was about to have a coloration issue.

Now I know what my black lab is up to when he runs off for a few hours.

Well, I'm so darn dumb that it took me two days to even get what you were talking about.

Maturation .... as in the process of maturing physically. ;)
