Ever used GOO OFF for removing decals?

The previous owner of the boat did a bad job removing the decals on my 1994 Bayliner Capri. I was left with the dirty sticker/decal residue outline on my boat. Is GOO OFF any good for removing this?

I saw a thread on using a heat gun and putty brush...but I don't want to spend too much on a heat gun...

Thanks for any help/suggestions!

I have used Goo Gone and it cuts the decal glue pretty well.

WD-40 or Goo Gone, elbow grease and patience will take adhesive residue off

I've used Goof Off and it has worked fine for me. If you use it in combination with a putty knife, use one with a plastic blade.

Whatever you use is going to take elbow grease.

2 products that I have used that work well, but I am not sure how easy they are to get from retail stores are 3M's Wax and Grease remover and Acrysol.

Thanks all for your advice and suggestions! I will definitely try a few of these. I heard acetone was too strong for the job, but I like the wd-40, "elbow grease", and goo gone/off, and plastic putty knife idea. the guy at West Marine said I should just use a clean rag to wipe or if I have extra wax pads, that should do. Thanks again!

Re: Ever used GOO OFF for removing decals?

Both goo gone and goof off work fine, with goo gone having a slight edge. Both can soften paint, but neither seem to bother gel coat. I used both Goo Gone and WD40 to strip the pinstripes off of an 87 Bayliner last month with no problems. Gel coat is pretty tough. I peeled the decals after heating them a bit with a heat gun, then went around and cleaned up any residue with Goo Gone. I used the WD 40 to soften the old registration decals as I worked on the rest of the boat. I then finished up with a foam pad and some gel coat polish. No more stripes, no more 10 layers of old reg. stickers.

I have some decal glue on my hyrdo I have not been able to get off with any chemical including Goo Off.
The only thing I haven't tried is the heat gun (mainly because it disappeared!).

I've used goo gone on all my cars and motorcycles with no problems. Some of the stickers are a little harder to get off than others but that's what elbow grease is for.

I've used Goo Gone quite a bit. I always found it to be a pretty good product. One thing that I did find is that paper decals, and decals with paper backs, come off more easily. I think that this is because the products seeps into the paper better, thus saturating the adhesive more thoroughly. When the entire decal is a plastic type material, removing it is usually a bit harder.

I have a bottle of Goof Off so I tried that first. NO progress whatsoever. It seems that whatever these stickers were at one time, the top surface is long gone. All that is left is the very thin plastic lining and the adhesive under that. It seems Goo Gone is not penetrating the plastic to get at the adhesive underneath.

You need to 'borrow' the wife's hair dryer...then attack the remaining glue with the Goof Off!

Re: Ever used GOO OFF for removing decals?

None of those products will penetrate plastic or vynil (most decals are vynil).

The decal must be mechanically removed (heat is best) first. The goo-gone etc. will only work on the exposed residue.

I've used Naptha with good results on the glue, but any of the others will work. I've found WD 40 to be the worst of the lot..... it really only provides lubrication for your elbow grease.

A good hair dryer can be used in a pinch but heat guns can be had at the big box stores for $50 or less..... granted they're not "good ones" but they're good enough for removing decals.

You can get a rubber wheel that goes on you drill that works well. Just be careful that you don't burn the paint. If its just the gooey glue left you can also us a pink eraser that you would use for erasing pencil on paper. The big thing is be patient and don't rush it. That's when things go wrong.
