I'm going tomorrow to have a look at a supposedly low time, fresh water Mercury four stroke.

Is there any indicator of overheating other than the discoloration of paint? Is there, for example, any sort of plastic or other material anywhere on the engine that was inlcuded by mercury specifically to indicate that the engine has been run hot.

Sort of like that little blot of ink in a cell phone to tell that it's been wet, is what I'm looking for.

always buy engines new. you dont know how they have been broken in. if they arent broken in properly in the first 10 hours they are junk anyway. the exception is old boats which come with engines in which case you can throw out the engine after its useful life is over.

After about twenty-five years on the internet, beginning with bulletin boards, and then a variety of fora on any number of topics, I think that's the most inane post I've ever read.

Congratulations: you certainly make the counterpoint to my observation re # of posts and expertise.
