I have a 1980 Evinrude 115hp Outboard which set in the prior owners yard for a number of years. I have refurbed electricals and am using a new external tank and fuel line.

When cranking the engine the motor seems to start like a champ for no more than 2 to 3 seconds and then dies.

A boater told me to try Berryman's B-12 fuel additive/cleaner and this should help.

Does anyone have an opinion of this or any answers? I think the high speed fuel valves are blocked??

Thanks,
MDB0866

Re: Evinrude 115hp Outboard - Will Berryman's B-12 remove varnish

Berrymans will disolve varnish to a point. For your jets it'll be best that you dissasemble them enough to get to the jets and emusion tubes if so equiped and spray from a spray can manually along with compressed air. It might even take some gentle probing generic carb clean page to dislodge hardened areas. If the tank has residual varnished out fuel left over after fluching and cleaning the best you can do, add Chemtool along with gas (and oil if used). Not too much as it WILL eat rubber components (if used in strong concentration). ADD AN LARGE INLINE AUTOMOTIVE TYPE FUEL FILTER NEAR THE MOTOR to catch any dislodged chunks. You don't want to clean the carbs too many times. Although it is not totally uncommon for the carbs to need cleaning more than once if you have a lot of solids in the flow.
