Just had a new water pump and spark plugs put in, now the engine is surging when you go across the water. Had a tough time starting it last night after we ran it for about 5 minutes. Seems to be smoking more than usual and running a bit rough in the no-wake zones. Any ideas?

Most surging is caused by air leaks; put a little steady pressure on the system with the primer bulb and look for fuel leaks all of the way to the engine.

Re: Evinrude 130 Engine surge

Forgive me if I'm way off base here, I have what is most likely a very different motor. But I was doing a search and found this.

I have a 35 horse 1958 Evinrude that was doing the same thing - surging, and smoking more than normal, and hard to start. I've traced it to a VERY bad fuel pump - the diaphram is letting fuel shoot out from the primer bulb. Rebuilding tonight. I think it's incredible that it even ran at all.
