My 1974 Evinrude 135 is "too old" for the local shop to bother with, so I'm on my own. Here's the problem: Trim and tilt work, but leak down quickly from either position. Additionally, will not trim under power. My first thought was that trim and tilt cylinders as well as pump all need new internal o-rings. However, I'm wondering if there might be a simpler matter that's causing this problem. I should add that I do not observe any external leaks. Ideas?

sylvan,

It's low on fluid. I doubt, seriously, it needs a rebuild.

1. Get some trim/tilt fluid from the local John/Rude dealer.

2. Tilt the engine all the way-UP. Brace it in place-fully up.

3. Locate the fill screw. It is a big head screw facing aft (back) on the tilt motor/reservoir assembly. That is on the right (starboard) side of the engine looking toward the bow.

4. Remove the screw and fill the unit until it just runs out.

5. Replace the screw and cycle the unit three times.

6. Run the engine UP again and brace it again. Check the level. If needed-refill until the fluid just runs out the fill hole..

You're done.

Thank-you! That's the simple solution I was hoping for. Let you know how it works out.
