hey guys im new to the forum. I just got this 1977 evenrude 140 on a 1977 17ft checkmate for 500. i got it home hooked a battery, fogged it, took a compression test it has 120 psi in each cylinder, then i tested for spark. The first plug had enough spark to skip an 5/8 inch. Then i looked checked the others and none have it. Then i checked the coils on the power pack and they had spark is this the power pack?

OK, I'm only responding because no else more qualified has yet. If it was mine, I'd move the first coil around to the other outputs and see if I have spark. If I do, then I'd buy some new coils. If I didn't, I'd start looking for a power pack.

Go to CDI Electronics.com. They have good trouble shooting procedures.

Usually the coils are pretty reliable on this engine. Unlikely that 3 of them have failed all of a sudden. You can swap them for testing, but likely you will find something else is the culprit. If you are just into parts changing, the power pack is the highest % failure item in the ignition system. From that % basis, it would be the "most likely" failure item. Since it's expensive and may not be the real problem, it's difficult to just recommend it as the part to replace. You've already commited to it's replacement, so hopefully your new power pack will arrive and it will solve your problems. If not, you've got two other equally expensive items to test, the stator and the timer base.

Ya, even if the powerpack solves your problem. Think I'd pop the flywheel off and have a look-see at the stator & timer base. Any oozing black goo is a no no.

got the power pack still no spark i ordered a timing base off ebay the other day

It's pretty expensive to just keep replacing parts hoping it will fix it. What's up with the other 3 cylinders on the spark test? Nothing at all? They should be able to jump 7/16. 5/8 is a bit of a stretch.

Years ago when I was in the automotive business there was a company that built test equipment called Sun test equipment. Their motto was, " Test, Don't Guess ". Some how I never forgot that over the years and it's always paid off.
