What is different between a 140 hp evinrude and a 115. The displacement is the same, I was just curious what makes the added power. One more question, I have a 1979 evinrude 140 and would like a few extra hp without upgrading to the next size engine. What are some good modifications to increase my topend.

Re: Evinrude 140 Question

Glen that is one of the most often asked questions. The answers are all pretty much the same. The best that you can do is get the best that you can out of what you've got.

There is a lot of differences between models with the same displacement. I had a 79 140 and that year they had the 115 and I think an 88 - all from the same displacement. The carbs, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, etc. were different. There is lots more to it than just slapping another carb to it and many of the so called "mods" will actually decrease performance.

Oh - yes there are racing guys out there that do those things but that is another world.
