I got this Evinrude 15 hp 1980 and during the first trial it was slipping out of gear. With closer inspection I found that the black cam in the shifting linkage was missing. Now I got this cam and while adjusting a linkage I was wondering which way the threaded rod should be to confirm that the mostly used forward gear holds in place. If I lengthen the rod, it moves the shifting lever forward, which is good, but at the same time it moves the black cam towards the neutral notch. Shortening the rod makes it other way round. I'd like to adjust it so that it is harder to shift it to neutral just because I do not know if it has been slipping before. Anyway it is not nice to test if there is problem in the gear box as well. Any suggestions for the linkage adjustments?

When you get it running I would love to know how you like it. I am thinking about repairing one I have.

There really is no adjustment on the linkage. The lower shift rod into the lower unit itself needs to be turned until tight then backed off only enough to line up with the coupler. The black cam on top will not hold the motor in gear. Have you checked for a spun hub in the prop or it could be your shifting dog and forward gear are worn.

I just center that cam to neutral notch. Check with engine off and slowly spin prop while moving shifter handle toward forward and reverse..each gear should begin to engage the same distance from neutral. You could forward bias shifter stroke..shorter distance to engage forward vs reverse, but that's usually not needed as the clutch dog in gearcase has detent spring/BB setup that holds dog against respective gear when selected.
Good luck!

Everything is working now. I adjusted the link between the black cam and the shifting rod connection. I think the forward gear does not stay in place while running if the rod is not connected at the upper end.
