Evinrude 15 - wont go to full throttle

The twist grip on the 79 15hp I recently bought wont rotate to full throttle. Read that if someone tilts the tiller handle way up and twists the throttle that the synchronizing gears can get out of mesh. If this is what the problem likely is, how do I go about correcting it?

Also, in manuals for this series of outboard, who makes a good one? Other than a original Evinrude manual, from what I can see the choices are Seloc and Clymers.

Re: Evinrude 15 - wont go to full throttle

Hello Dave and welcome to iboats!

In some cases where the gears are wore between the handle and where the handle connects, yes the can slip out. But....look closly at the gears and you will see one large gear. If the gears do slip out, this large cog would not let you put the handle all the way down. Is this the case?

If not, let's look at some other possibilities:

You didn't give a whole lot of history on the engine....like....when was the last time the carb was serviced, has the engine set for a long period of time, is both cylinders firing.

As for the best manual, the OEMs have it all over the generics...(Seloc and Clymers) If you want a reprint of the OEM manual, check the links below.

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/evinrude/order_pre-1980.html

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

Don't hesitate to post any info you might have on the engine. The 9.9/15's are great little engines.

Thanks for the welcome!

Don't know much about the motors history but its a super clean 1979 Evinrude 15hp two stroke S.shaft with electric start.

Motor started fine and ran well on the hose flusher but would not throttle up much past a fast idle, also found out during closer inspection that the lower cylinder plug hole was almost completely stripped. Lower unit lube was dark & overdue for a change but no sign of water contamination.

I took the motor anyway as it appears to have been used very little and looks almost new despite being 25 years old. It sounds like I can have a machine shop install a helicoil and lock it in with red Loctite to fix the bad plug hole.

Re: Evinrude 15 - wont go to full throttle

These engines have a lever on the side of the block that prevents them from over revving in neutral. You don't want to rev them real high in neutral. If you did put it in gear and tried to rev it up and it still don't, possibility that the carb is gummed up.

The spark plug holes can be tapped for helix coils but are difficult because the plug goes in sorta sideways. I modified two taps to do the job at my shop. It is best to pull the head to do this although the tap can be given a generous gob of grease to catch the shavings....but this is no garantee that it will.

The handle goes all the way from tilted to operational - red indicator on twist handle only advances as far as the "Start" position and goes about half an inch past the "Stop" position going the other way so it seems out of synch to me.

Saw your post on your modified taps for doing the helicoil - I just don't feel like attempting it myself.
