I posted this earlier this evening but it disappeared from the forum I hope I didnt violate any rules etc.

Well Im no longer a boatwantabe, bought one yesterday and need you help. The boat has twin Evinrude 150s, Model E150NXENC, E150EXEM---unreadable , serial numbers GO3076183 and GO3014951.
Where shall I start to get the boat shipshape? I have a problem with one of the engines, Was to go on a sea trial before purchase, when arrived at the dock a hand was replacing the spark plugs on the starboard engine, the port engine was idling. He said the Boat Broker had the boat out the previous day and thought it could use some new plugs
(I was very suspicious of the whole situation)
The engine started, I did see the water stream from the rear of the engine, the broker trimmed the engine down and accidentally killed it. Tried to restart, no go, starter very slow, they said that they just put new batteries in the boat but must have left the pumps on over night and the battery drained. ( I pointed out that the pumps are on automatic switches) They said that it was flooded, took the cowling off tilted the motor up, took I dont know what it is called but where an air filter would go if boats had air filters, took that off, unscrewed the fuel line and about a half cup of gas spilled out. They did this 3-4 times, the starter went slower and slower, they put a charger on this battery. They attempted to start the engine I noticed electrical smoke coming from the joint on the steering connector between the engines. I insisted that they stop screwing with it and we re-negotiated a price for the boat with only one working engine and took the boat home.
With the paperwork for the boat the original owner included several receipts for work done this spring, including new batteries, fuses holders for some electronics and engine tune-up ect. It appears to me that the boat has some type of electrical short that is draining the battery(s), dont know if the other battery is effected.
I am charging the battery, should I put some ears on the engine and try to start it or is there a short somewhere that I should find first? The boat did perform OK with just the one engine, but it is a twin

I just found that where the power enters the engine, heavy black and red wires, red attached to a terminal that is part of a black plastic square shaped object, on what looks like could be the starter, could this be the starter solenoid? This assembly is loose, can move it around, dont want to mess with it without a manual (I just e-mail requesting availability and price on MFG. Repair Manual for engines) or advice from someone knowledgeable.
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give the engine detectives enough information to work with.

Thanks for any help

Mike
