Hi Guys, I'm new to the forum & could use some advice. I have a 1997 150hp Evinrude with a few issues. 1st is that when I shift into/out of gear the motor sputters like it wants to stall but if I give it some gas It wont. The second problem is that it runs hot, and has since the day I bought it (new, as a leftover from a dealer 4 years ago). The dealer said it was ok, but it runs around 200 deg. The alarm doesn't sound and the telltale is still strong but it concerns me. This motor has already had the powerhead replaced & the carbs rebuilt (under warranty). I have 1 more year left on my extended service contract and I am going to take it in, but I can alreday hear the dealer's song and dance so I figured I would post this 1st.
Thanks!!!!

Bobby
Take it to Lindenhurst outboard and talk to Ralph. He is authorized OMC/Bomb dealer and a fair guy. Motor should not run anywhere near 200°F. Alarm should be sounding around 180°F. Phone him @ 631-225-0077 and explain it to him.
Good Luck

I would ask Ralph that same question. Call him early in the morning for best results. Is the extended service contract with your present dealer or with OMC/Bomb? Have you verified the head temperature with more than one gage? What rpm are you at in neutral, what about in gear?

Re: Evinrude 150 Problems

It is a 3rd party contract that was actually purchased by the dealer for me because of how many headaches I've had with it, It is called Passport. It was a 4 year extension effective after my original 1 year omc warranty ran out. I haven't tried another gauge, i will have to double check the exact rpm's. Other than the 2 problems i mentioned, it runs strong up to 5600 rpm and idles fine too.

If your control cable is out of adjustment, you may be riding the shift interrupt switch which causes three cylinders to cut out while shifting out of gear. This will cuase the problem you are having. You will have to read your contract or ask your "former" dealer if your contract covers repair by other authorized dealers.

Re: Evinrude 150 Problems

God help me if I ever have to deal with the dealer i bought it from. We went to war over this lemon right after 2 dead cylinders in my 1st powerhead led to a replacement, and then the carbs had to be rebuilt along with a new starter. he is also the on ewho told me it is ok to run at that temp. His head mechanic and I almost threw fists last time i saw him. I will re read it, but i believe any authorized omc dealer can repair. Thanks for your help!

I checked my service plan and it says any authorized dealer can do the repairs. Every time I call that numbr, it rings & then a modem picks up

Re: Evinrude 150 Problems

i've had nothing ut trouble since day 1 with this motor and that dealer. i've already gone through a powerhead as well as carburetor and starter issues. those guys gave me a real hard time with getting it repaired. by the way, all of this work was needed after about 20 hours maybe.
