I have a 1985 Evinrude 150 that has hard start and is not winding up to full rpm’s. I checked the plugs and 4 & 6 plugs looked like new with a little fuel on them. I checked spark with a gap tester and it has a strong arc. Any ideas on what else I could check. Thanks.

Lots of things. Propeller, timing, fouled carburetors, linkage, the list can go on..

First thing to do is a compression test.----Post your numbers.-------Could be a blown head gasket between #4 and #6.

I just went thru the exact problem with my 78 235 Johnson. I just got it out of the shop ($!400) and was on the lake yesterday, and still the same problems. It was hard to start, hard to keep running, and only 4500rpms and would not idle when warm. The fuel connection to the motor was sloppy, and I had mention it to the mechanic when I brought it in. I checked the connection today and it was STill sloppy. I searched in my garage and found a mixed package of 'O' rings, found one that fit, and I started the motor. It has not sounded that good at idle for quite a while. I think this solves my problem for now. I will find out next time at the lake!
Something that simple but it has plagued me for a while. I hope this may help!
