I looked at a 150 HP Evinrude tonight, I'd like a project to work on, and this motor looks like a project. I have a bunch of questions.

I was a bit confused by the model number, as I'm used to model numbers like my 90 HP Johnson (J90TLCIM).

I found out this is a saltwater model, what is the difference?

I could not find the difference between the 150849 and the 150840 models. I assume the 849 is the 25" model, and the 840 is the 20" model?

I'd like to rebuild this motor, but if I do get it, and find out it's trashed, how many of the parts are interchangeable with my J90TLCIM outboard?

Would the lower unit from my J90TLCIM work on this 150849?

What portion of the lower unit is longer?

Does a saltwater model = stay away from it?

I once bought a 1988 Johnson 45 HP that was sometimes used in saltwater to rebuild it, and the bottom of the crankcase was corroded, I had to grind out the alum-oxide, weld, and re-machine. Should I just assume this motor is corroded on the inside, all the bolts will snap off, etc? I don't live anywhere near an ocean, but this motor must have started its life near one...

I can pick up this motor, with all the wiring & controls for ~$200. Worth it?

Re: Evinrude 150849?

Alright, after looking at the parts manual, it seems the 150 HP is a 25" transom model, and the exhaust housing & pivot brackets are longer, so it seems it would be a bad idea to put this motor on a boat that has the J90TLCIM motor on it, as I'd have to drill new holes in the transom? 5" seems like a lot too... I would have liked to been able to swap motors back and forth easily.

Argh!

Can anyone tell me with certainty, what these different 1978 Evinrude 150 HP model numbers decode as?

150840
150849
150840S
150849S

Specifically, which ones are "long shaft" 25", and which ones are "short shaft" 20".
