This is my first time so please excuse me if I don't have the proper edikit. I am not the greatest speller either. I recently bought (past winter) a 1987 150hp evinrude that I am having problems with. She seams to run good (maybe just a little rought) while idleing , and when I thottle up. However I took it out for the first time last week and when I gave it the gas she started to get on the plane and just died. It kept on acting this way and I had to idle my way back. My freind said it looks like its not getting gas. I had a mechanic look at it , and he is not sure and recommended another marine shop. He did a compression check while warm , throttle in neutral, and said the cycinders all were 75 to 85. After looking at the forums I see this is extremly low. He said there are some low compression engines out there and this may be o.k. Here is my Question : Is this model a low compression motor? Maybe I should get a second opinion ?

Another opinion would be in order. If all the cylinders are low, but even, a good decarb job may be all it needs. I'd probably start with cleaning the carbs.

It seems like you arent getting the fuel volume you need for high spped. It could be,the fuel hose is too small that feeds the motor from your tank, should be 3/8,or your gas tank may not be getting a good vent that will result in your engine not being able to suck the fuel,if you loosen the tank fill cap and hear air rush in ,that is a sure sign, but not necessarily. You can loosen the cap and if problem goes away, that was it,you may have a dirty fuel filter restricting flow, the squeeze ball may be bad, does the ball get sucked in,meaning losing its shape as though you squeezed it,if so that indicates a problem between the tank and the ball,if its not the vent, the pick up assembly could have a problem, did you try squeezing the ball as it starts to lose power,if squeezing the ball gets it up to power, the problem is either the inline filter,a hose to carbs could be squeezed or bent,or the fuel pump is going bad.You compression is not the problem

Thanks for your replys, however I checked the fuel lines and I'm going to try with an external tank to eliminate the guessing. I ordered the carb kits to clean up the carburetors, and I'm going to try this decarb stuff. I'll let you know in a week or so how it works. I 'll have to take it one at a time till I find the problem. Thanks.

You have a base 150. Compression should be in the 95 range normally. While borderline low, it will probably run with the compression as is. I'd do the decarb that Dhadley suggested, then retest compression. You need to decide if you want to put money into it the way it is.
