I have a 1992 Evinrude Spite Fire. I start the motor and it peeing fine but the water temp seems hot to me.My first thought was the thermostats and took them out. I took a pot of water and heated it up and drop them in there and they reacted so I'm sure they are working. if its peeing and the stats are working what should I look for next? I don't have a temp gun and I did notice that while holding my hand in the stream of water that I could swear it felt like I would feel cold for maybe a second then back to hot. I have a old Mercury and when it runs, the water stays maybe warm but never feels hot if you idle it for 20 minutes. thats what makes me think she running a little on the hot side. Thx

little thing to guess on but wouldn it be at idle that the engine is under some stress mainly since it keeps going and that the combustion temps r kinda high?

i mean i wouldnt worry abotu anything as long as it aint over heating espcecially at full throttle id look into more

Re: Evinrude 150hp water temp question

I haven't ran the motor yet in the water (bay). I just got this motor and was getting everything hooked for its first start. I cant hold my hand on the heads for maybe a couple seconds then its too hot. I'm just trying to make sure before going out on a test run. this is my first big engine and I want to make sure it doing whats right. I asked because I have a 65hp Mercury that when connected to the hose, it doesn't get anywhere near the temp Im feeling with this motor. it can run for 20 minutes and still be warm to the touch of the water coming from the pee drain. Luke warm but this motor is a lot hotter than warm so I question it. I may be over cautious about it. I don't know. this is running it maybe about 5 minutes. it also has a hose coming out of the plug side that it blocked. I don't know why? I know that some motors can have this on there for another way for the head to release water. I would think that since the motor is running from a flushing hose that it would be cooler than what I have but I may be wrong. maybe Im just over reacting? Thanks

your motor has 143 degree thermostats. that motor will run cooler at 3500 rpms than at idle. the motor will not idle correctly if not warm.
the motor will drop in to "S.L.O.W" if it runs hot.(2500 rpm)

S.L.O.W. (speed limiting overheat warning). This feature limits RPMs to about 2000.
