Hello to everyone and happy holidays. I have a quick question. I was reading my Seloc Manual and was looking/reading under the tuning section and it said the fuel pump has a metal screen in it and it needed cleaning every so often. So I went to my boat inside my garage and took the engine cover off and removed the flat head screw holding the round cover that contains the metal screen off of the fuel pump(the pentagon traingular part on the port side close to the carbuerators). Anyway I was amazed how much crud(dirt clump particles was inside that screen. This is the first time that I removed the screen on the fuel pump since I have owned the boat for almost 2 years now. Didn't know about a screen inside the fuel pump. My question is would that crud dirt clump looking particles cause the motor to run a little rough at idle speed? Just curious. I didn't pull my boat out to crank it and verify if it would idle better, but maybe I will if it is nice out and somewaht warmer over the New Year holiday. Just curios waht the experts think. Thanks, Bob

If it had as much crud as you say, I would think it likely to impede fuel flow at higher than idle speeds, more than idle speed. What is also likely, is that, given the amount of crud, some of the smaller particles made their way through the screen and are affecting the idle circuit. If that's the case, tear-down, soak, and rebuild the carb(s) with new kit(s).

Re: Evinrude 1989 88 horsepower outboard V-4 idle question

Boat Bouy,

Thank you for responding. I am not to sure how the fuel pump works. I was branstorming and thought that at lower RPMs the fuel pump isn't working as hard as it is at higher RPM's. I thought that fuel flow output is less at lower RPM's and is greater at higher RPM's. Maybe that is why it doesn't run as fast as it did since I have towed it from South Carolina a year ago. When I first bought the boat it ran 53 MPH. Now I can get it up to 48 MPH. The idle is slightly rough but not to bad though. How hard is it to clean the carbs. I do have a SELOC manual but it has so many different carbs for the different motors posted inside that book. I am just worried that I will tear into it and find a bunch of parts and can't figure how to put it all together again and it run right. I hope I don't make it worse. Do you know the part number of carb kit I need. My motor is a 1989 Evinrude 88 horsepower SPL V-4 model# E88MSLCER. Where is a good place at a reasonable price to buy this kit? Thanks again

Never done a carb for your engine, but most are fairly simple. Usually getting the carb off is actually worse than actual rebuilding. Sierra carb kit part number is 18-7046 and can be found here http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=109334&gd_row=69&**********=356575852 . They're also available through your local NAPA auto parts. BRP kit is BMC-043076 and can be gotten from your local BRP(Johnson/Evinrude) dealer or online from ishopmarine.com.

When you get the actual BRP (johnson/evinrude) carb kit it will contain gaskets for several other carbs not just yours. So when you notice extra parts don't be concerned, just use the parts that looked like yours.

I wonder why BRP doesn't just offer a gasket kit like merc (or does it). Because 9 times out of 10 if you just disassemble, clean/soak, dry and blow every orfice with compressed air, and reassemble with the carbs with new gaskets is the answer without the need for an expensive carb repair kit.

-andy
