My 1993 Evinrude spitfire series starts ok and runs great at high rpms. When I am idling around (very slow speeds) it starts to cough and sneeze if I dont give it more throttle it will stall. Another senerio is if the engine is good and hot I will shut it off and do a little fishing. In about 20 to 30 minutes hen I restart it . If I dont throttle up in newtral int will stall. Ive replaced the power pack, optical eye , spark plugs, and had my carbs cleaned please help me. Thanks

Someone else also told me I could be running lean I had a sync and link done and the carbs cleaned it has helped a little but I'm still experiencing the same issue. can the vro be bad or need adjusting? This problem has been going on for a year and has been driving me crazy. Any information would be greatly appresiated. Thanks

it idles around 700 in newtral. I'm not sure how far it drops when I put it in to gear. I had an evinrude dealer perform the sync and link thanks for the quick responce.

this is a different motor. but should be similar. the very top bolt in the picture is the idle speed stop screw, should have lock nut on it, and rubber tip, loosen lock nut, and turn clockwise to speed up idle. the idle in gear and in the water should be around 650-to 750. as slow as you can get it to run, without stalling, when shifting. then retighted the lock nut.

If the motor is running lean would this damage the motor in the long run?

Yes, for sure. A shop manual would give info on how to find/correct lean conditions. Stuff like air leak into crankcase, exhaust leak inside cowl, etc. Exhaust leak can be checked by removing cowl and running ... does the sneezing go away? If yes, exhaust leak. Lot of other stuff to check.

You were absolutly correct Jim. I brought my boat to the local Evinrude dealer he located an exhaust leak from a hose around the starter area. The boat finally runs nice!! This idle issue has been going on for over a year. Thanks for all the help. Sean
