I found a 96, 90HP evinrude in lightly used condition. It seems like it would be an easy motor to work on, but I have found very little about them on the internet. I guess I could say if I am not finding bad stuff about it then that's good. I'd like to hear from anyone that has had one, and how they feel about it. It will be a good jump up in years and HP from what I have.
It's a 60 degree motor, compression is very good and it's very clean.

only as good as the maintenance and up-keep for the past 22 years. if the motor was well cared for, it may last 60 years. if it was rode hard and put away wet, it may blow up tomorrow. it all boils down to condition.

with anything used, it is the condition that maters.

The 60 degree V4 engines were loop charged blocks, basically a V6 with two cylinders lopped off. They required a crank with offset throws to have 90 degrees between successive cylinder firings. They were torquey engines, and quiet. During the tine they were available, there was the 90 degree crossflow also being marketed by OMC. The crossflow was a well established engine rival and was cheaper, so not that many 60 degree seem to have been sold. Scott above, mentioned how an engine is maintained will certainly affect its longevity.

The "more expensive so less sold" makes sense. Was it a good design or fazed out because of problems other then expense? I wondered/ worried about the torque pressure. I will be putting it on a 1984 19' Ski barge that has a rating up to 115 hp. In 1984 I imagine 115 hp was a little different motor then now. I don't want to stress the hull to much. The motor looks and sounds great, seems like the owner took good care of it.

The Looper motor was never phased out the crossflow block was. I always thought the V4 Looper was probably the best motor in its class at the time. They were overall better running stronger and more fuel efficient than the crossflow block was. The main weakness with them was the ignition system and those issues are pretty much fixed by now with better parts. I would absolutely Buy one And Put it on my Boat. The basic design of that motor was used for a lot of years.

I wouldn't worry about the transom being stressed, unless it already has a rotted core. And yes the V4 looper was adapted into the FICHT, and later the e-tec lines.
