Hello,

I recently acquired a 2 mate evinrude 1970-something. It won’t start or even fire... i took the carb apart and cleaned it. I checked for spark by removing the plug, grounding it (while connected in the boot) and spinning the flywheel with my drill. It seems to have a good spark..?.. I shot a little carb cleaner in it’s throat, but it doesn't want to fire. I know that I shouldn’t start it with car cleaner, but know that it should fire when done.. seems to have compression, but don't have my tester with me (200 miles away). What could be wrong? Thanks.

Does the " good spark " jump a gap of 1/4" on a testing device , yes or no?

Your question caused me to research spark testing devices. I will get one and check. The plug slipped a bit from the "grounding surface", while I was winding the flywheel with my drill. It shocked me pretty good:)

You can just open the plug gap on an old plug to test for 1/4” spark with your method. Also, stick your thumb over plug hole and turn flywheel by hand..good compression will try to blow your thumb off..

If that is a points ignition engine it could have a bad condenser and still give you a jolt.

I can't kep my thumb over the plug hole when winding. This leads me to believe that it has some compression at the least. Gonna try opening the gap on an old plug.. Can I pop the flywheel off by holding it with a strap wrench and ratcheting of the nut? If so, I'll get one, take it off and clean my points etc. Thanks.

If the coil is original it is likely cracked and due for replacement.------An impact driver takes the nut off in seconds.
