Evinrude 225 Damage from loose magnets

I just had my 1990 Evinrude 225 diagnosed by, in my experience, a very reputable dealer in the area. He told me that the magnets came loose from the engine and damaged the stator, the flywheel and the connections to the power pack. He estimates the repair to cost about $2,500.00

Is it reasonable that loose magnets could cause all of this damage? Is it worth fixing this engine? It ran very well before this incident. The dealer has a 1989 200hp Johnson that he has serviced for years and he would install it in place of my motor for about the same money.

Any suggestions as to which way I should go? I will be looking to upgrade to a larger boat in about 5-years. I don't want to invest large $ for a newer motor.

Thanks for your time.

The magnets can be replaced / reglued. No need to replace the flywheel for just that.

The stator may need replacing if the magnets tore it up.

The connections on the pack can be replaced. It just depends on how bad it is.

It'd be interesting to see a breakdown of that estimate.

You can buy new magnets and/or epoxy kits from a dealer. Have the magnet mounting surface on the flywheel bead blasted, or the rust will work its way up and once again "pop" the magnets loose.

You can also buy a magnet retainer kit that will always keep them in place:

http://outboardparts.com/omc/mall/finished/35rk.htm
