Evinrude 235 hp will not turn over

I just got a checkmate with a 235 hp envinrude. I charged the batt and tried to turn it over. no-go...The starter acuated and the flywheel did not spin. I took the plugs out and tried again, same results. I even put a ratchet on the nut holding the flywheel and it moved barely 1/4 inch. The piston moved about a fraction of an inch when I did that. Any ideas??? <br />Thank you in advance!

Was it overheated? Run out of oil? If it was just improperly stored, maybe a few sessions with some WD-40 and a breaker bar will loosen it up. Hope you got it cheap!

David,<br /><br />How long has it been sitting? It may just be the water pump (impeller) sticking in the housing.

Here's one I experienced recently.<br /><br />Starter pinion got itself wedged just right in the ring gear to freeze op the starter. It would click and nothing. Wow Virtual dead short. <br /><br />After I popped the hood, screwdrivered the gears apart then spayed on some of that teflon spray oil. Not an issue since.

Davidp,<br />That dosn't nessarly mean that the engine is locked up. Drop the lower gearcase,and try again. I've worked on several that had a locked up gearcase causing the engine not to turn over. If so it could be cheaper than a powerhead rebuild.<br />Good luck
