Evinrude 25hp 1990 wont turn off!

Hi all, I'm looking for help.

I have bought a secondhand motor, in Ireland and the motor starts perfectly. The only issue now is that when I turn the key to the off position the motor still runs. Even if I pull the lanyard off the kill switch it continues. The only way I'm able to kill her is by disconnecting the fuel line.

I will upload a few pictures, I've noticed that the brown wire after the main controller-motor connector is broken hence no alarm would be working.

Should I look to re-wire this or is it a case of re-wiring the back/yellow wire?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Look for problems in the kill circuit,----Black / yellow should go the ground when key is turned to " off "-------Picture #3 shows the manual lever missing on the primer valve as well.

Kill circuit is:

Black ground wire at powerhead to powerpack.
Black/Yellow wire from powerpack to ignition switch raised "M" terminal.
Black wire from normal "M" terminal of ignition switch to ground.

Key=OFF: "M" terminals are connected - ignition shorted out.
Key=ON: "M" terminals are NOT connected - ignition engaged.

An easy test for your ohm meter.

Ok,

I noticed that the black / yellow wire looks like it had burnt as some of the actual wires inside were black. I re wired the wire from the engine (Large Red Connectors ) to the ignition, but still have the same problem. Can you tell where to re-wire from the other side, as it looks like the black/yellow goes up into the fly wheel area....?

Also If I wanted to create my own kill-switch, would I be correct in wiring coil/magneto to earth via kill switch?

Regards
Mike

Re: Evinrude 25hp 1990 wont turn off!

your ignition is the UFI type < I believe ,you may have to check with the model no. to be certain > and the kill circuit , blk/yw, does go into the power pack which is under the flywheel. If you have a connector that unscrews, it should contain the wire from the kill switch and the wire coming from the pp. You can unscrew it and ground the wire coming from under the f/w which should kill the engine. If it doesn't kill the engine then the kill circuit within the pp is suspect and replacing the pp may be the only fix.
I use the engine diagrams at ma rine eng ine. com< combine into 1 word > to look up components, but there are other sites as well

Ok,

Problem solved....

There is a connector along the kill wire as seen if my fourth picture. I bypassed this connector and all works as it should!

Thanks to all those who helped!
