Evinrude 2hp - points timing

I just put new points/condensor on an Evinrude 2hp. The manual just says to set the gap at the highest point on the lobe. Well, easy to say, but kinda tricky to find the highest point. What is marked is a 10 degree or so area with TOP written in it. That is 'about' the highest point so that's where I set it. But now that I've put it all back together I am wondering where TOP is - is it the centre of that 10 degree area, or the middle of it (no markings). It won't make any difference to the timing - as long as I get the high point. Another engine I have has a dot in the middle of that area which I assume to be TDC - next time I'll check it - but you think it would say so in the manual, would you not?

Also, while I always put 50:1 oil in my engines, this 2hp has 100:1 wrtten on top. Would I be right in sticking 50:1 in it, or would it need a different hotter plug to burn it or something?

If it was mine ,I would use 50:1.I have a 95 25hp,the manuel says 50:1,high-performance use 25:1.

Quote``The manual just says to set the gap at the highest point on the lobe. Well, easy to say, but kinda tricky to fin``

What that means is`Take hold of the flywheel and rock it backwards and fordwards, when the high point of the cam-lobe opens the points, stop rotating. Then check the gap.adjust to where it will be what the manuel says.

To set the points gap,has nothing to do with the time.Forget about the time and markings on the flywheel.Timing it is a subject in itself...I hope I helped some..james

Pull the flywheeel
Rotate the crank shaft and align the crank key with the point set rub block (part that rides on the cam)
Adjust the point gap to .020
Replace flywheel
Torque flywheel nut to factory specs.

Fuel: Mix 50:1.....OMC went back to a 50:1 mix.....remove the 100:1 sticker.

yes, remove the sticker, OMC tried 100/1, but put out a service bulletin to remove the sticker, and use 50/1.

PULLING FLYWHEEL

you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.

Anywhere within that area marked "top" is just fine. It will get it as close as you are going to get it using the feeler guage method. If you want to be a stickler and get it "perfect" use the timing fixture tool. In all probability, using the tool will arrive at something a few thousandths or so off from .020". But .020" is plenty good enough. It isn't rocket science. The timing fixture does make it a lot easier and gets it right with no guesswork.

BTW, the points gap DOES affect timing. More importantly, it affects the time that the points open in relation to the magnets passing by the coil laminations. But again, it is not rocket science. Don't be overly concerned.
