Hello,

I have a ~1981 Evinrude 4.5 that was not spitting out water. I stopped the motor and then went through the task of replacing the impeller. Installation went smoothly and the old impeller didnt look to be in too bad of shape.

I started the motor a few minutes ago and it is still not pumping water. What should be my next step? Blockage maybe. The motor has hardly been used. The guy i picked it up from kept it in his barn for years. I've picked a lot of dead bugs from it but otherwise it has started up in 2 pulls every time with no problems except for the lack of water being ejected.

Thanks.

for the price of a new head gasket it would be well worth your time to pull the heads and check the water jackets for any fouling. If it is pluged up you will have easier access to remove the fouling, just dont scatch the face of the head while you are doing it.

Are you sure that the water tube went back into the rubber seal on the water pump? Also, if you dont have the water deep enough the waterpump won't prime = no water. Before you pull the head I would try blowing compressed air up the water tube, might force an obstruction loose. I ended needing to pull the power head on my 5.5 to clean out all the little japanese beetles:(

Got it running and spitting water.

I made sure i had both the top and bottom intakes on the cavitation plate submerged. Didn't work.

I dropped the lower unit again and checked the water tube. Sure enough it had missed going into the water pump block. I thought for sure when I put it together last time that it was in place but i must have missed it. I sewed everything back up, started the motor again and it was pushing water with good flow.

Problem solved!

Thank you for your replies basher and masterofmachines.
