i have been given an old evinrude 4.5 serial no B002592 model E5BACSS
its a non runner - i checked the compression and found 0 in the bottom cylinder. i have taken it apart and found damage to cylinder, piston and rings.
i dont know what caused it but i think it may have been one or more of the needle bearings. there is a gouge in the cylinder i cant measure the depth but clearly it will need a rebore. i am willing to attempt a repair as a winter project. could you tell me if the necessary parts are still available for this engine and do you know where i can source them, ideally an english supplier to keep shipping costs to a minimum. also, could you give me some tips for reassembling the needle bearings and rebuilding the piston - both look like awkward jobs - do i need any special tools?
Many thanks

Re: evinrude 4.5

That's a 1980 model.

Generally the parts catalogue HERE will tell you the availability of parts and give you the US prices at least and part numbers of course.

Users of the UK based www.YBW.com forums have found that WILLSMARINE in Devon (Kingsbridge IIRC) are good for mail-order spares.

I also have www.outboards-direct.co.uk (Oakley Marine) in Brighton and www.outboardservices.co.uk in Cornwall (Falmouth?) noted as possible sources.

I reckon you will need a workshop manual, preferably an official OMC one.

Not worked on one of these but some light grease should stick the needle rollers in position.

If the piston pin is not a floating fit in the piston heating the piston in boiling water will expand it enough to get the pin in.

I assume you can press the little end bearing into the con rod with a vice and that the pin will be a sliding fit into that.

BUT I assume you will be getting a engine reborers to do the machining, they will probably be able to assemble the piston on to the conrod for you if necessary.

Make sure you note which way round seals are fitted when you remove the old ones

Some useful articles in the ENGINE faqs
