When was the impeller last replaced, Rob? It might be overheating.

Hmmmm. 1982. Remote tank or integral?

water pump was just replaced. The tank is built in, it reminds me of a vw van i had once with a dirty fuel filter. It did the same thing

i'd try a carb soaking and rebuild. rinsing out the tank, and check the pick up screen. check for spark right after it dies, could be coil getting hot and opening.

I think on your engine it's impossible, but if you can try dribbling a little water on the head. If it sizzles it's getting too hot. That outboard has a parallel cooling channel and can appear to be cooling fine when it's not.
Pull the fuel line off the carb and make sure you're getting enough fuel flow to the carb. Often the problem with gravity fed outboards. I think that's more likely the problem.

Checking the fuel flow from the tank is simple enough, disconnect fuel line at carb and check for a steady fuel flow into a seperate can.Make sure the tank vent is open as well. Since this seems to be a new to you motor, I'd pull the flywheel and check that indeed the coils are newer and have no cracks and are properly indexed to their mounting bases. Confirm point gaps, ground and condenser connections while your at it. Removing the coils and checking spark plug wire connections is easy and one less thing to guess about. Lastly, check sync and link for proper adjustment and full motion of spark advance. If you didn't personally replace the water pump impeller, I check that too.
Post back on what you find.

Re: Evinrude 4 hp 1982 cuts out

I got in touch with the local dealer Lordship marine and had them rebuild my carb,
They did a great job and only charged me for a half hour. the idle screw was very loose
I blew the fuel line in reverse with air and filled the tank with gas, emptied the tank several times into another tank with a paint filter. inside the white filter there was allot of dirt.
They let me test high speed the tank at lordship and it ran great!
I also installed a clear gas filter $1.50
Thanks to all of you for the great advise
