I have an 1988 40HP Evinrude twin VRO.

Now I bought a lot of parts from a 1979 55 HP ( crankshaft HP - later the 50HP model ) that blew the powerhead - rod outside the housing !

The question is: will using the carbs from the 55 HP ( 50 ) increase power on my 40.

Is there any other difference between 40 and 50.

Maybe, but not that you would notice in "seat-of-the-pants" feel. The 40 and 50 blocks are ported differently and that's where the hp difference mainly comes from. The 50's carb has a slightly larger venturi and is jetted richer than the 40. You'll definately use a little more fuel.

-John
