Hello gentlemen, and ladies. Just joined, first post. I just obtained an Evinrude model 4423. Serial #36195. From what I can guess, I think it's a 1950??...I think? The only other outboard I have any experience with (although not much experiance) is a 1953 Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5 hp which is now my brothers.
This Sportwin seems in really good condition. I want to make sure it runs before I repaint it. I was told it ran when it was dropped off at my friends about a year ago. My overall plan is to get this thing looking as good as I can, then build a retro shipping crate where I can then keep the motor displayed (after all proper flushing and fluid removal) in my basement (as that's the only place my loving wife of almost 28 years says I can put it) with some of my other vintage fishing tackle on and around the motor crate. So far I've got a decent handle on the upper part of the motor but there's a gap (what seems larger than it should be) between the upper unit and what I believe is the pivot bearing. When pushing the upper unit up towards the pivot bearing i can see the shaft does not move, just the upper unit about 3/16" to 1/4". Also, the upper unit swings a bit port and starboard against the direction you turn the motor. It seems the gap is roughly the same dimension as the pump washer as far as hieghts go. Is this normal? If not, is it a large issue to repair? I figured I'd ask for help before tearing into something I'm not familiar with.
Thanks for your time and sorry about the long winded rambling. I hope I've explained it ok.
Thanks again,
Doug.
