I just acquired a starcraft with an evinrude 48 SPL. The sticker is worn down so i cant tell the model number. I want to buy some parts (plugs, carb rebuild, impeller etc) but i need to determine what the difference between 88-89 models and the 90-96 models are. I see that (**********) all the 90-96 models use the same parts but 88-89 have their own parts. Are any of these parts interchangeable? Is there any way to determine if my motor is indeed a 90-96?

advice appreciated

Re: evinrude 48 SPL

well i parked the boat at my old mans place, so i'll be over there this weekend to test the motors out and ill be back with some pictures and info that hopefully will help get these running in tip top.

the other motor is a 1991 15 HP evinrude. Im hoping that the 48 is the same year as the little one (might make sense?).

So what things should i do? The PO said the 48 HP runs for about 5 minutes then starts surging and dies. Im thinking its possible he forgot to vent the gas tank, used bad gas, or something simple.

I will bring my compression tester, new plugs (for 90-96 models). any other ideas? i want to bring more parts but need to make sure im getting the right ones!

thanks in advance

There is usually a Serial # on one of the core (freeze) plugs on the side of the block.

photo (39).jpgone more...not sure if this is "Freeze plug" but it was on top of cylinders

also, almost got the engine to fire. fuel lines were plugged, especially the fuel line into top of carb. going to attempt a carb rebuild next weekend and see if that helps.

Looks like it had a replacement power head. You could call BRP customer service and maybe they could help you out with that number.

Re: evinrude 48 SPL

so last week i did a compression test.. i pulled the plugs and cranked, but didnt have the best battery power nor did i hold the throttle open. but the compression was only 60 in both cylinders. THe engine will start, but revs high real quick then dies. i did this with the muffs on. I plan on doing a carb cleaning, but with the compression like that i might pull the heads first and do an inspection (also it was a harbor freight compression tester so that could be the culprit as well)

thanks

Update:
Rented compression checker and bought new battery. 120 psi in both and spark is jumping 1/2"

I rebuilt both carbs. I verified that the needle seats by blowing into the fuel inlet but when I pump the bulb is gets firm but not hard and fuel spills out the carbs. It should still run this way correct? As long as it doesn't flood too much?

Tips appreciated. I will likely year these apart again and reset the floats. Maybe I'll try and test with fuel rather that air and be sure needles seat fully.
