evinrude 48 spl idling problem

my uncle has a 48 spl outboard that will not idle. we took the carbs off and had them cleaned and put them back on only to do the same thing. what could be causing this problem? it runs fine every other way. any help is greatly appreciated. how good are these motors and are there any problems with these motors?? thanks in advance Raven:D

There is nothing wrong with those engines. Did you clean them yourself or have a dealer do them. I would put new kits in them if I had them apart. Make sure that you give them a good soak and every jet and passageway is blown out with air.

outboard carbs are coated so just spray with carb cleaner NO SOAKING this something you do on cars not boats
check synk and lynk, best to have Q series champions and the go after carbs

Check for spark on both cylinders and check compression. An engine with a dead or very weak cylinder will not idle well -- especially a two cylinder. Have you adjusted the idle speed and idle mixture with the engine in the lake (not on muffs). The dealer can't do this for you if all he had is the carbs.

hey can anyone tell me where the idle adjust screw would be on a 48spl i think late 80s motor?? im having problems with the engine idling it keeps stalling also it stalls when i put it into gear i think the idle is way to low ??? thank you david LI,NY
