Hello all, need some advice to why my motor might be overheating. Its pumping water in and out just fine. does fine at low speeds but at about half throttle it runs for about a minute or 2 and then the overheating alarm comes on. took the hood off and the engine is very hot. All I have done to it recently is adjust the idle a little higher because it was slow and cutting off. Thanks for any ideas

Sounds like you need a new impeller for your water pump.

flush your motor while you have your gearcase down, remove thermostat housing and stick a hose on your water pipe.

I removed the thermostat housing and found that the previous owner had gutted it out, and it was also gunked up pretty bad. back washed the motor and some sea grass pieces came out. cleaned everything up and hopefully it will do well now.

that ought to help. I have heard of using 2 stainless steel washers in place of the thermostat. slows the water down enough to allow it to cool.

you can. thermostats are not really needed here in the south. so some people just use the washers because they never get stuck closed and cause over heat.

That's what a friend recommended because he took his thermostat out. I'm in NC so it's pretty warm these days. I'll try the washers for sure. Thanks for the tip
