The engine runs fine I'm just laying in a supply of maintenance parts. In looking at the BRP web site the recommended spark plug is a Champion QL78YC for my 1989 Evinrude E48ESLCER engine. I like to shop Amazon as much as possible because I get free shipping. On Amazon this plug is listed as a "Racing" plug. I looked on iBoats and a few other sites and it also comes up as a motorcycle plug and as a motorcycle plug sells for $2.95 instead of $6.95. With the 9.00 UPS ground shipping its a wash but I am curious as to why Amazon labels it as a racing plug. I have the engine set up to run at 5500 RPM at WOT so it isn't being lugged or over revved with the normal loads I carry on a 17 ft Bonita center console boat. I run 87 octain pump gas since I trailer the boat and can stop for gas before the boat ramp.

Re: Evinrude 48 SPL silly spark plug question

Champion's web site doen's list a spark plug for my engine in their application guide. They do list the QL78YC as a racing spark plug when I enter the plug number in the part number box. There is an NKG spark plug that comes up on the NKG part selector for my particular motor. Seems Evinrude changed the spark plug number on this engine three times. I see no reason to deviate from the OEM recommended plug. It just seems funny that the word "racing" can add 4 bucks to the price tag.

champion might not have been able to get the information from the outboard maker.....thus they dont want to stick their neck out and RECOMMEND, the wrong plug....

my guess
