I have a 96' 48 spl and the tilt and trim are starting to make some noise, sounds more mech then electrical. It is surging very little and that to me indicates a possible fluid problem. But never having serviced one, and not having a book to guide me, I need help. There are two screws, a large and a smaller one, they appear to be set up like as if I was changing the lower unit oil, but until I know how to add oil or what screw does what, I'd rather wait till I know more. I do know enough to secure the motor in the up position so that it won't come back down on top of me. So if anyone has any exp, please help. And sorry if this has been covered, but I couldn't find one, so here I am.

thanks

Re: Evinrude 48 spl tilt and trim help

Get a tube of Power tilt/trim fluid from your local John/Rude dealer.

Run the engine up and secure it.

The large plug is the fill.

Fill it to the bottom of the plug hole.

Replace the plug.

Run the engine up and down a few times (it is self bleeding).

Run the engine up and re-secure, remove plug.

Repeat above.

Also ensure that the manual release valve is closed tight.
