I am considering buying a pontoon boat with an Evinrude 48 SPL 2 cyl. motor. I am just wondering what is the difference between this and a 50 HP motor? Has anybody had any bad luck with these?
Just trying to do some research before purchase.

Re: Evinrude 48 SPL

almost bullet proof. i've been looking for one for months. the only difference is they do not have the VRO fuel/oil mix pump, so you have to premix you gas, which i prefer to do. you don't state what year.

Re: Evinrude 48 SPL

I have a 1990 Johnson 48SLP i bought practically new in 1992. Other than Spark plugs and changing of the lower unit grease been a good one. Only thing i had to do is put a lower unit seal in it once and the tilt assist cylinder was bad from the start. Unless you have power tilt the assist is probably been replaced or is tight and hard to raise motor. But if it's on a pontoon it probably not a big deal to raise the motor every trip.
