Hello, I had a evinrude 4hp sent to me through the post. I think it must have spent part of the journey upside down, because I can't get it started.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to fix an engine that hasn't been stored properly?

Cheers

Martyn

martynl

You really need to get a Manual to work on your motor properly. One of the first things you will want to do is check the compression to make sure the engine is sound. Then rebuild and clean the the carb(s), as it's probably gunked up from sitting. In the meanwhile, You will want to check for spark(Install new spark plug(s) and if it does have good spark, mix some pre-mix in a spray bottle and give it a few shots into the carb throat and see if it attempts to fire. Don't let it run long, as you will also want to replace the water pump before you run it for any period of time. Can you provide more info on how long it sat and if it ran before. A year and Model number would help, also.

This is good reading:

web page

Re: Evinrude 4hp

Thanks for this info.

I don't think it was sat for long upside down, maybe a 3 or 4 days max. It was working before so I was lead to believe. I don't know the year of the engine, it says it is a evinrude 4 and the serial number is 44b36rb14532.

I'll take your advice and get a manual for it.

Cheers

Martyn
