Evinrude 50hp seems to be running hot. How do I check water flow to head? No pee hole

My 1972 50hp seems to run hot after I installed a new lower unit. The pump is fine but I have great difficulty confirming that the water pipe connecting the pump to the head is fitted correctly (tried mirrors and flashlights ect). Very frustrating.
I'm fairly sure the pipe's in place, but the engine seems to run fairly hot to the touch (water boils off the head when splashed- hot).
I need to confirm that water is reaching the head but can't think of a way how. I've tried an anto stethoscope but the engine noise snuffs any possibility of hearing water flow. This model doesn't have an independent indicator stream so there's really no way to tell, that I can see, if water's pumping out.
Would hate to ruin my motor and am getting VERY tired of taking off the lower unit (this will be the third time in as many days).
Suggestions??

does your hot horn in the control box activate while its running? To check to see if your hot horn is functional, locate the temp switch on the upper left side of the cylinder head. Its about the size of a dime with one, possibly two wires coming out of it(depending on whether it was replaced recently). Slide the cover off the connection of the brown wire, with your key on, ground the connector to the head or a bolt. it should scream if its working properly.

Pretty sure the overheat horn is working, i've activated it before and it's nice and loud. Not sure about the actual temp switch- looks pretty old so who knows- might be the next thing to replace. anyway i think i've figured it out. i reinstalled the lower unit today with an extension tube i made to ensure proper seating of the pipe. I decided, after the same signs occurred, to try putting the cuffs on the lower unit while it was off the motor. water barely trickled out of the pump housing, so it seems that the hose at my new residence doesn't have the same pep that my old one did. i think it just wasn't getting enough water from the source, and the impeller and ascending tube are good to go.
guess i'll just have to try her in a truly submerged situation where it's getting fed ample h2o.

You should be able to hold your hand on the engine while it is running. For a little while at least. If water boils on the outside,it is because there is no water on the inside.
It sounds to me that the lower intake is clogged with something like weeds or plastic or zebra mussels which will slip through the screen and grow in side to the point where they clog the intake.
