Having not got a warning signal from my 1994 evinrude 50hp 2 stroke motor, it ran dry of oil and seized almost certainly scoring the cylinder. Cold, and with no plugs i can rotate 50% by hand, the other 50% being too seized. Should i try and lube up and force rotate til i can start it to see how much compression is lost? Can the head be bored out and fitted with oversize pistons (if all available) without losing too much horsepower? What kind of costs are invloved, compared to a new/refurbished powerhead?

Get some oil into the combustion chambers through the spark plug holes as soon as possible and then buy a new head gasket, Replacing it will give you the opportunity to examine the bores and the the tops of your pistons for damage.

Thanks ezeke, i did that, but still cant spin the head by hand. Before i embark on a dismantling adventure, Has anyone out there had any experience of seized 2 strokes of this size, from oil starvation, and repairing them ( 100% successfully), or am i living in a dream world!?!

It can probably be overhauled, but if it took out the crankshaft as well, a remanufactured powerhead is the only cost-effective alternative. Most oil injected failures result from water in the oil tank or air leaks in the oil line. Your alarm system might have failed, but more likely the horn itself failed, or your boat never had one. I run into that WAY too often. Boatbuilders cheaping-out on one of the most important components there is. Risking a multi-thousand dollar motor for the sake of an alarm that costs them less than ten bucks. Those boatbuilders don't deserve to exist!

amazing response time willy! i didnt explain myself very well though: With lube sprayed into the cylinders i can twist the big cog at the top (the one which hooks up to the starter motor) half way round, rotating the cylinders, but the other half rotation has too much resistance, with 2 batteries on the starter i can 'click' the engine through the other 180 degrees, then it'll spin half way and stop again. Does this mean the crank is Ok? Any idea what a boat store might charge for a srip down, bore out and rebuild?

P.S i live in the canary islands, i think it would cost hundreds of dollars to import something that heavy.
