Hello i just picked up an Eninrude 5HP 1966 model # 5602R. I took off the flywheel and She looks like she has new coils and has a nice spark! The carb was very clean so I started her up with a rope. The pull start spring is broken and needs to be replaced.I have the spring out but was wondering about getting a new spring and how to install it.Also ,the engine seems to look like a long shaft. Is it possible to make it a shorter shaft? thanks john

It's hard to explain how to change a starter spring. my suggestion is to get a repair manual for your motor. Even a Clymer or Seloc manual will have some instructions for replacing a starter spring. As far as converting to a short shaft goes, you'll need the short drive shaft . The copper tube for the impeller can be just cut off shorter (5").

Re: Evinrude 5HP Angler

ive found it difficult from time to time to get a srort shaft drive shaft and have had good success with taking the long one to an engineer and having it sectioned and welded....but this needs to be done by a proffesionial as it needs to be perfectly straight to avoid vibration and there can be no question about the quality of the welds!!
